From The Nautilus in Timonium, Maryland. Tony and I made a trip there the last time I was out there for his MICA thesis show. I had the meatloaf, Tony had the chopped sirloin steak. It was a lot of food for a little price. I also had one of the worst bloody marys I’ve ever had there. Ketchup and vodka (maybe).
The business card reminds me of a diner postcard from the 1950s. and the printing quality on the back is great.

I have a collection of about three dozen junk faxes I acquired while at Larsen. I’ve been thinking of what to do with them for a couple years now. They are designed to be so hard-working, so blue-collar, so pedestrian. I think it’s actually pretty refreshing to take a really hard, serious look at such low level design after looking at really good and mediocre design work so much.

I found these cards at the coffe shop near the office. They were on the table with all the flyers and free publications. I immediately fell in love them. You can’t tell from the scan but these babies are printed with thermography (pause for whistles and oohs and aahs). There’s something wonderful about the innocence and subtley of these cards. There sole purpose is just to pop into your life and say ‘hai’. They’re not trying to impress anyone with the graphics, or the printing, or the copywriting (especially the copywriting). But none the less, they are perfect. The use of text speak (txt speak) is what I’m most impressed with. Taking something that evolved specifically from digital communication and printing it on a business card is hilarious! These cards are text messages made real! But, unlike text messages, I get to keep these forever. I have them taped to my monitor at work to provide constant inspiration and enjoyment.

This is the order ticket from Hot Doug’s Sausage Superstore and Encased Meat Emporium in Chicago. I’ve held on to it for a couple years now. This ticket is filled out by the order taker at the counter and passed along to the cooks. The whole system is intended to improve efficiency and prevent mix ups. It works really well too. For how busy Hot Doug’s gets they don’t seem to mess up orders. A couple years ago I went with some friends and the line was out the door. We waited outside in 30º December wind just to get a dog and duck fat fries (which are only available on the weekends). We gorged ourselves and didn’t even finish the duck fat fries. Then we took a nap.
I like the systematic ordering system created on the ticket, and the social nature of its use. The abbreviations are great too (can you figure them all out without cheating and referencing the Hot Doug’s condiment page?). I’m guessing that the counter staff and the cook staff barely read the words on these things anymore. Dealing with them day in and day out I bet they can read it at a glance just by the relative position of what’s circled.
And don’t forget the Hot Doug’s theme song.

I found one of Morelli’s ads in the newspaper a while back and was truly mesmerized. What density! What economy of space! What hierarchy! I’ve been checking in on their website every once in a while ever since. There’s also the option of downloading the PDF! Which you can download to make your own Morelli’s inspired design work!

I got this from the lunar new year celebration my little sister’s Korean dance troupe performed at. There were also family games, a group meal, and the traditional bestowment of gifts on to children by their parents. It was in a church basement, it was a little strange, but the food was fantastic. We were encouraged by Pastor Park to sing along using the photocopied sheet. Pastor Park was supposed to be in charge of the whole thing, but I think his wife (Mrs Pastor Park?) actually ran the show. I’m not sure what the translation for this is, but thought it was interesting enough to keep. You can see more photos at my Flickr set.

They’re like B-boys, but they’re buildings! Iconic architecture breakin’ it down to a funky beat! St Basil’s turned out the best so far I think.
